(CNN) — The Venice issue is indisputable. What can be saved is up for discussion.
Now, one group thinks they can transform the floating, sinking city – with “flying” boats.
The Swedish company Candela believes that its electric boats can help fight “moto ondoso” – the dangerous type of waves that hit houses and sidewalks from the path of boats to be driven around the city.
Candela’s boats are meant to do just that. The Candela C-8 and P-8 Voyager were the first no-wake, high-speed foiling daycruisers. And while the C-8 is a conventional ship, the P-8 Voyager was designed to carry passengers – either as a passenger vehicle or as a passenger ship, raising the specter of a possible taken on a large scale around the city.

Driven by aircraft engines and drones, the boats produce a path of 5 centimeters (2 inches) when “flying” at 30 knots – about the size of a hand-paved gondola, and may not hit the base of the city with the waves.
Meanwhile, the large 30-seater P-12, announced in June 2022, promises to be the first “flying” ferry – with a range of 60 nautical miles and a speed of up to 60 kph (37 mph), the operator. He can beat the rush hour car on the tracks with a difference in the wheels.
The 2022 launch follows the launch of Candela’s first boat, the C-7 pilot, which began in 2019. Unlike other boats, it does not have a fixed hull, e.g. making it a fun summer boat.
Electronic dreams — and nightmares
Electric cars may have been popular for a while, but electric boats have become more difficult to operate. The weight of the water on the boat’s surface, combined with the weight of the battery that requires power, is a double whammy for boats, meaning that most of the time they have to change the speed or distance.
A single 100kWh battery in a typical boat can handle 30 nautical miles at 20 knots before running out, according to Candela. But raising the hull out of the water solves the towing problem. These boats are 400% more efficient, and can run for 150 minutes before needing to rest, the company says.
Candela’s “flying” boats are the brainchild of founder Gustav Hasselskog, who saw his ice cream rush while on vacation in Swedish lakes selling for 10 times more. more than his family’s ice cream cones cost in gas.
He calculated that conventional boats used about 15 times more power than a car, at a speed of 20 knots – where they had trouble powering through the battery. Instead, he thought of raising the boats from the water, on hydrofoils, making them “fly,” and using aircraft engines and drones to make it happen.

“Flying with absolute silence, without clicking and for free – it’s just an amazing experience. Once you try Candela, it’s hard to go back to traditional power boats”, says Hasselskog , in a statement about C-8.
“Venice, which relies on cruise ships but also suffers from their fate, is the perfect place to show how Candela’s work can contribute to a better world, while providing new levels of performance.”
The boat begins to move like any other, but – like an airplane – as the speed increases, it starts to rise. The tanks are also retractable, which means the boats are less vulnerable to rising seas, and can be inflated.
“Boats with that type of hull do not make the moto ondoso when using their foils, but the foils are only strengthened above a certain speed, which is now high for the lagoon context,” explains it’s to CNN.
“It’s not a good idea for a vaporetto [waterbus] on the Grand Canal or by freighter.”
However, he suggested that the boats could get power outside the city center, such as on the way to the airport, in the north in the canal, or connecting Venice to islands such as Burano and Pellestrina.

The Candela water bus is available for long trips around town.
However, he said it would be difficult to maneuver boats at speed around slower traffic, and suggested that city traffic should be reconsidered before making a decision.
“It’s interesting to do some experiments [with Candela]but before this possibility is introduced on a large scale, the movement of the lagoon water needs to be reconsidered,” he said.
“The first is important to speed up the transition to the electric driving of all boats in the city as much as possible, the second is to achieve the implementation of speed limits through technologies that can detect the shape of the boat, and thirdly, the speed limit may change. to the shape of the boat.”
Meanwhile, Venice awaits, Stockholm stands. The local government has ordered an investigation into the P-12 aircraft, using boats on the road from the city center to the town of Ekerö, with the aim of running back the fleet log out. Boats are often upgraded to compensate for their small size. The ships will go into operation in fall 2022 with trials to begin in the first half of 2023.
