Today, a research team led by Prof. Sun Song from the Institute of Oceanology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (IOCAS) determined the critical threshold of dissolved oxygen (DO) for the survival of the green mussel through an experiment covering the DO range of 0.5–2.0 mg L.-1 within 16-days notice.

They re -evaluated the effect of DO changes and fluid retention, and looked at the responses of metabolic rate and some important enzymes to determine physiological stressors.

According to the results, the mean threshold of DO for experimental mussels reported at 16 days of hypoxia was 0.7–0.8 mg L.-1, below which survival was significantly reduced from nearly 80% to less than 38%. When hypoxia is combined with DO fluctuations or poor fluid intake, the threshold may rise because there is a higher risk of death than those under the same severity of hypoxia.

From a physiological and biochemical point of view, the researchers found that the blue mussel was an oxygen conformer that lowered its respiration rate and energy levels. each person when the DO concentration falls below 5-6 mg L.-1.

Of all the enzymes analyzed, acid phosphatase and alkaline phosphatase are the simplest, with the immune response being considered to be a major threat to survival. the blue mussel with a lack of energy.
