Using their model, the team analyzed 700 pesticides from the EPA’s pesticide list. The model considered the persistence or damage of the pesticide to the environment over time, its safety, and its effectiveness in killing, reversing, or managing the problem. expected.

They found that only 52, or 7%, of the chemical compounds analyzed met the requirements for a safe chemical. According to the researchers, while the results from the study show that most pesticides are not safe, many can be saved by changing their molecular structure in ways that reduce their exposure. “Our review suggests there is a potential for improvement in the development of safe pesticides,” said Jessica Lewer, a graduate student at GW and lead author on the paper. “In addition, the model we have developed can be used for better protection and design of safe pesticides as well as design and used in other industries that rely on commercial chemicals, for example cosmetics and cleaning products. ”
