Taking care of pollutants, such as endocrine disruptors, is a good way to protect the environment. Endocrine disruptors are chemicals that alter the hormonal and developmental systems that are known to them, even in small amounts. Medical student Julie Robitaille and Professor Valérie Langlois of the Institut national de la recherche scientifique (INRS) are working on a water treatment device to predict their catastrophic consequences.

The two researchers are working with community members and businesses to look at drinking water and wastewater to plan for industry changes. Unlike current methods of fish testing, their methods are not related to animal testing. Instead, their pathway uses human cell lines, which are converted in the laboratory to monitor certain hormones.

“When the endocrine disruptor awakens the receptors in these systems, they emit a small light. That is what determines if the bad water can affect the hormonal system,” he said. and Julie Robitaille, a medical student in water science. However, he says more research is needed to show how their phone information translates into liquids.

The cocktail contaminant

It’s hard to watch the bad water from the “cocktail” of endocrine disruptors inside. “You can’t just look if everything is present. You have to look if the whole company has an effect, because these contaminants can have different effects when combined with chemicals. Other, ”said the Ph.D. student.

To test for the effects of the contaminated group, the researchers turned to bioassays, using biological analyzes to measure the effects of their cell lines when contaminated water was detected. , without realizing the unclean things they have found.

Robitaille used a number of techniques to demonstrate the effectiveness of this approach, one of which involved creating a list of all the tools available to editors. He led this book review in collaboration with scientists who are members of the Intersectoral Center for Endocrine Disruptor Analysis (ICEDA).
