Perhaps you have heard that shampooing is better for your hair. Or if you’re thinking of getting rid of shampoo and joining the “for the head” movement to find healthy and beautiful hair.
Experts say there is no single answer to most people who shampoo. You may not have to do it as often as you think. It usually comes down to personal preference. For guidance, take a look at your hair style and styling options.
“I always said,‘ It’s better to go a few days without shampooing, ’” says Alli Webb, a professional hair stylist and founder of Drybar. “For normal hair in the form of oily and medium weight, I sometimes tell my customers to go a long way without shampooing.”
The idea behind this? Frequent conditioning will lead to the hair being thinner than lush.
How Shampoo Works
First, the basics: what does shampoo do?
Shampoo contains oils, so if you use it often, you can dry your hair and leave it to break, says Angela Lamb, MD, an assistant professor of dermatology at Icahn School. of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City.
“Hair releases a natural oil called sebum, and shampoo is an emulsifier that captures and traps excess oil, dirt, and product residue, and then you wash it to clean the hair,” she says. Lamb.
Most of all, some dirt is nice and natural – and you really want some oils to stay in your hair.
“They provide moisturizing and protection for the skin and hair,” says Carolyn Goh, MD, assistant professor of medicine at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA.
Who is the Daily Shampoo?
Experts agree: Only a small group needs to clean up every day, such as people with the best hair, the most (and fresh) hairdresser, or someone who is sitting still. at a very low level, Goh said.
“If you have scalp oil, you need to wash it every day,” he explained. “Sometimes people think they have dry hair because they have dandruff, but in those cases, it’s better to wash it often.”
Who can walk some days without washing?
The thicker your hair and the less oil, the less shampoo will be available.
“Some people with dry hair or thinning hair can wash frequently without any problems,” Goh said.
How much to wash?
For a normal person, every other day, or every 2 to 3 days, without washing is good.
“There is no announcement. “If you see oily hair, redness of the scalp, or dirt on the skin,” these are signs that the shampoo has arrived, says Goh.
How long is it?
If your hair is tied back, you can go a long way without tangling it.
“If you’re doing a blowout or using hot styling tools on it, the main thing I tell people is to clean your hair when you start, “said Webb. “The longer the hair, the better, and you have to use those essentials less.”
Yes Lamb has many different types, and you need to think about the whole preparation process.
“Part of it is the culture, the natural style and thickness of your hair, how much sweat and fitness you have, and the style,” she says. “If it’s made with keratin or you’re smoking, you don’t need or want to wash it more than once a week and add stress to your hair.”
Go with your heart and your will, with one car. “Depending on the condition of your hair, however, it won’t go much longer than 14 days,” says Lamb, who doesn’t buy the ‘for the whole head’ amount.
From a health perspective, Goh says some of his patients only wash their hair once a week. He says if they don’t have head problems it seems like a good thing. He did not teach them to wash often.
How to go long between washes
In recent years, more products have been available to extend the length of your journey between washes. And people are coming in all sorts of ways to take care of their hair.
“The powder really works in the oil, so it doesn’t stay too much on the head,” Lamb says.
“If you have to do style, leave conditioners can help. You can re -clean your hair and condition it more often,” Lamb says. This is sometimes called the “co-head” for using conditioner in shampoo.
For the most part, it is a personal desire for the cleanliness that they want in their ropes.
“Everyone has a different threshold for what kind of oil or texturized they want their hair to look like,” Webb says. “I tell people, ‘Fresh is like salt, isn’t it?’ You get the feeling, some of those natural things that you can avoid with it, but that’s also the beauty of a dry shampoo. . “
To rejuvenate your complexion, Webb recommends spraying a dry shampoo where the oil and dirt collect: just the roots. Spray on the hair and neck area, then lift and spray on small pieces of hair. “Push about 3 to 4 inches from your head,” he said.
You can use dry shampoo as a protection. “I’ll use my stylists on the latest blowout for the lift,” she says. “You can also make some cotton before you go to bed, and fry some of the oil at night. It’s like trying hard to keep yourself.
So how do you know when to clean up?
“If it’s the fifth day and you lose your temper, wash it,” Webb said. “Or do something fun to change it. Part your hair in a separate place, go for a side curl, go for a bun. Use a dry shampoo. If you can camouflage, fine, and you often get rewards when you do something else.
Age and Stigma
In recent years, it has become much easier to remove hair without shampooing, with many people going for a week or more between shampoos.
“A lot of my patients are worried about washing their hair often, but they need to wash it often!” Goh’s place.
But the length can be tolerated. Caroline Lynch, an IT professional from Michigan, thinks she can leave a bottle of shampoo on for several days. “Because of my thick and curly hair, and more hair than most people, I’ve started to wash more often in the last few years,” she says. “I kept letting the sun go before I knew I could.”
She uses shampoo about once a week. “Frequent cleaning has improved the quality of my hair, because I don’t damage and dry it with shampoo, and then with styling tools like blow dryers and flat irons and with curlers, ”he said. “It saves money, so I can buy a higher quality shampoo and conditioner that is better than using me too often.”
Lynch wants to be quiet about his usual routine for a week.
“I get a lot of praise for my hair, and stylists always tell me how healthy it is, so I think I’m in good shape,” she says. “But I’m afraid to tell people about how often because of the stigma, or people who think I’m dirty for not washing often.”
