The Copernicus Sentinel-3 mission took this amazing photo of the Scandinavian Peninsula near noon on 20 March.

The Scandinavian Peninsula, comprised of Sweden and Norway, is about 1850 km long. It flows south from the Barents Sea in the north, the Norwegian Sea in the west and the Gulf of Bothnia and the Baltic Sea in the east. Denmark, Finland, Latvia and Lithuania are featured in this week’s image.

On the south side of the peninsula, fjords that line the Norwegian coast can be seen from the sky. Many of these fjords were shaped by thick glaciers formed during the last ice age. The largest and deepest fjord on the coast of Norway, called Sognefjord, is in southwestern Norway and is 1308 m deep.

Sweden’s topography is mostly flat country, surrounded by lakes. Lake Vänern and Lake Vättern, Sweden’s largest lakes, are clearly visible at the bottom of the peninsula. The lakes are not very dry in the winter months. It is located in the northeast of the Finnish peninsula with 55 000 lakes – most of which are made up of glacial deposits.
